Stay Focused on Your Health Goals During the Holidays

The holidays are here and with that comes a flurry of events, food, traditions and more food.

One can’t help but think about turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole and pumpkin pie when the word Thanksgiving is mentioned. As you prepare to celebrate, here are a few tips to help you from over-doing it.

  1. Stay focused on your personal health and wellness goals. Don’t let the excitement of the season provide you with excuses not to eat healthfully or exercise.
  2. Plan, plan, plan. As the saying goes, failure to plan is planning to fail.
  3. Make your calories count. Strive to eat only those foods you really want, in amounts that are right for you. Savor each bite and if something doesn’t taste as good as you remember it tasting, don’t eat it.
  4. Aim to fill half of your plate with fruits and vegetables, ¼ with protein, such as turkey and the remaining ¼ with a starch or grain such as mashed potatoes, dinner roll or noodles.
  5. Be mindful of how you’re feeling throughout your meal. Remember, the goal is to finish your meal feeling full, not stuffed. Eating food you don’t need is the same as wasting food.
  6. As soon as the meal is over, place all leftovers away. This not only keeps food safe, but it also prevents unnecessary nibbling.
  7. Liquid calories do add up, so pay attention to what you’re drinking.
  8. Incorporate activities into your Thanksgiving plans. Whether you participate in a local run, or a game of football, or even a walk after your meal, there are many ways you can enjoy the holidays while being active.
  9. Make sure you don’t compromise on your sleep. Despite the activities you may find yourself involved with, your body still requires adequate rest.
  10. Remember the true meaning of the holidays. It’s so much more than the foods you eat. Enjoy time with family and friends.

 

With care and attention, you can enjoy the holidays while not compromising on your overall health and well-ness. This year leave the stuffing to the turkey!
